Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Malaria remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, particularly in regions like Sabon Gari Local Government Area, Kaduna State. Broadcasting has emerged as a vital tool for creating awareness about malaria prevention, treatment, and control. Radio and television programs disseminate information on mosquito control measures, the importance of using insecticide-treated nets, and early treatment for malaria symptoms. Studies have shown that targeted health campaigns via broadcasting significantly improve public knowledge and behaviors related to malaria prevention (Ahmed & Bello, 2023; Musa, 2024). This study explores the role of broadcasting in combating malaria awareness in Sabon Gari LGA, examining its effectiveness and challenges.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite extensive health campaigns, malaria remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Sabon Gari LGA. Factors such as misinformation, limited access to broadcasts, and cultural beliefs may hinder the effectiveness of malaria awareness campaigns. Additionally, there is limited research on how broadcasting impacts public knowledge and behavior regarding malaria in this region. This study investigates the role of broadcasting in combating malaria awareness in Sabon Gari LGA, addressing these challenges.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the content and reach of broadcasts addressing malaria awareness in Sabon Gari LGA.

2. To assess the impact of broadcasting on public knowledge and behavior related to malaria prevention in Sabon Gari LGA.

3. To identify challenges and opportunities in using broadcasting to promote malaria awareness in Sabon Gari LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

1. How comprehensive and accessible are broadcasts addressing malaria awareness in Sabon Gari LGA?

2. What impact does broadcasting have on public knowledge and behavior related to malaria prevention in Sabon Gari LGA?

3. What challenges and opportunities exist in using broadcasting to promote malaria awareness in Sabon Gari LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1. Broadcasts addressing malaria awareness in Sabon Gari LGA are comprehensive and accessible.

2. Broadcasting significantly improves public knowledge and behavior related to malaria prevention in Sabon Gari LGA.

3. Challenges such as misinformation and limited access affect the effectiveness of broadcasting in promoting malaria awareness.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study highlights the role of broadcasting in combating malaria, contributing to public health improvements in Sabon Gari LGA. By focusing on this region, the research provides insights for media practitioners, health organizations, and policymakers. The findings will inform strategies to enhance the effectiveness of malaria awareness campaigns via broadcasting.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to broadcasts addressing malaria awareness in Sabon Gari Local Government Area, Kaduna State. It does not include other health issues or regions.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

1. Broadcasting: The transmission of health-related information via radio or television to educate the public.

2. Malaria Awareness: The level of knowledge and understanding that individuals have about malaria prevention and treatment.

3. Public Health: Efforts aimed at improving the health and well-being of communities.
